The Problem

The customer needed two large stockpiles of de-icing salt to be surveyed. They needed to know how much salt had been used since the stockpiles were first measured and how much the remaining amount was worth.

ABJ Drones Solution

ABJ Drones took several hundred shots of each stockpile. We then used these images to generate accurate 3D models of the stockpiles, which were then used to calculate the volume. The accuracy was increased by using five ground control points for each stockpile.

Using our advanced surveying methods, we provided the client with exact stockpile volume data, along with images of the 3D model used for the calculations. The customer was then able to measure the density and quality to get the final valuation numbers for the salt.

There are many benefits to using ABJ Drones for surveying and volume measurement. The customer now has more detailed reporting on the volume of the salt stockpile and how much it’s worth.

Completing stockpile surveys with drones using photogrammetry is especially useful for very large stockpiles and stockpiles with odd shapes, as traditional methods really only calculate volumes assuming simple shapes. The traditional methods involve taking laser measurements at precise locations using surveying equipment and using that data to calculate the volume of the stockpile.
